Blog #744: Opinion: The Transformers Thrilling Thirty Debacle

ttsad

We finally, I could say unfortunately, have the complete list of Transformers Thrilling Thirty toys.  Thank god this deplorable attempt at celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Transformers is over.  The incompetence shown by Hasbro in constructing a set of toys to celebrate the 30th anniversary that does little to actually celebrate the 30th anniversary is unconscionable.  Filled with mostly store and convention exclusives, and doing more to promote Age of Extinction than celebrate 30 years of Transformers, I really hope that they ignore future anniversaries instead of doing crap like this.  It is incredibly disappointing, as this seemed like a really great idea when it was announced.

I am going to go through each member of the Thrilling Thirty as horribly constructed by Hasbro and then explain my reasons why they should or should not have been included.  Then I will list the toys that in my opinion should have been included in the Thrilling Thirty.  I’m sure if you ask 100 fans they will give you a completely different list, but this is mine.  I would love some comments on what else people would have or would not have included.

Why They Should or Shouldn’t be Included

01 – SDCC 2013 / HTS Exclusive Generations Metroplex

To start off with, convention exclusives should not be included in the Thrilling Thirty.  Now, it’s true that HTS does get these toys, but the quantities are so limited that the majority of fans would be forced to go the ebay route and pay huge markups to complete the Thrilling Thirty set.  It just doesn’t make any sense at all.  Add to that, this toy got a retail releases, and there is no excuse for it’s inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.

02 – SDCC 2013 / HTS Exclusive Beast Hunters Shockwave’s Lab

As with TT01, it is a convention exclusive and should not have been included.  Additionally, it’s not a very good set.  The colors on the Commander Class Predaking aren’t very good.  Shockwave is nice, but the play set is a joke.  Even if this were a retail release, it would not be worthy on inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.

03 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Ultra Magnus

This one is in.  It’s a remolded, not just repainted, toy of a classic Transformers character, even though it’s based on his Transformers Prime incarnation.  It’s a pretty nice toy, too.  I don’t mind store exclusives so much, but there should be a limited number of store exclusives as it can be hard for people to get to certain stores sometimes.  As most major retailers have online stores these days, it’s far less of a problem than convention exclusives.

04 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Grimlock vs. Bruticus

I know that Generations Bruticus sucks.  I don’t think it sucks as bad as others seem to, but it is by no means a great toy.  But Bruticus is a classic character.  It’s also the best paint job of any of the versions of this toy, except for the G2 version, which I would include to represent G2 if it had come out in 2013.  The set does include the awesome gold Generations Grimlock, but there is a better version of this toy included further down the list, so this one is really about Bruticus.  Also, it’s really the only new type combiner available.  We have G1 Predaking, but another combiner is needed to represent their importance in Transformers history.  So this one is worthy of inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty, though I feel slightly nauseated about it.

05 – Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong 2013 Exclusive Generations Metroplex

A foreign exclusive?  What in the name of fuck.  This is moronic.  To make it different they change the red and purple decoys to gold and silver.  Talk about stupid.  For more on this, read my response to TT01, but think about it being in all caps with a lot of swears.  To say the least, this one does not belong in the Thrilling Thirty.

06 – Cybertron Con 2013 Exclusive Beast Hunters Shockwave’s Lab

This sucks worse than the foreign Metroplex, because the Commander Predaking is in much better colors, which we should have go here.  See TT02 for more details on why this should not be included in the Thrilling Thirty.

07 – Cybertron Con 2013 Exclusive Prime Beast Hunters Beast Hunter Optimus Prime

It almost felt like they were trying to make them less and less worthy of inclusion as they went through the first seven toys.  This is a USA retail toy in a special sleeve, not even an exclusive box (I believe, it could be a new box, but I don’t think so).  What a complete joke.  This one must be judged unworthy of inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.

08 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Acid Storm

The argument could be made that Acid Storm could represent Transformers: Universe in the Thrilling Thirty.  It’s certainly a decent toy.  The problem is, this should have been Skywarp.  This is the second Masterpiece G1 mold.  The original mold was released as Starscream in G1 colors in the USA, and was released as Thundercracker in G1 colors in Japan, and both the USA and Japan got a version of the original mold as Skywarp.  This new mold was released in Japan in G1 Starscream colors initially, in the USA as G1 Thundercracker, but has never been released anywhere as G1 Skywarp.  This was the perfect opportunity to complete the set of G1 jets with the new mold, and instead they did Acid Storm.  It’s not a bad toy by any means, but shouldn’t have been made.  Giving us this instead of Skywarp, or even a proper Sunstorm (more on that later) sucked royally.  So, this should not have been included in the Thrilling Thirty.  I might have included it if I had more numbers, but there are too many other deserving toys.

09 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Soundwave

This one is in.  No question.  This is exactly the kind of toy that should be included in the Thrilling Thirty.  I do have a bit of a caveat to this.  More on that later.

10 – TRU / BBTS / HTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Predaking

It is incredibly depressing that this is the only G1 mold to be included in the Thrilling Thirty.  It’s a great reissue in the newer gold trimmed color scheme previously released in Japan.  It unfortunately did not include the red eye stickers, but that’s a small thing.  They also created a new mold sword for Predaking, so that is cool.  No question this one belonged as part of the Thrilling Thirty.  Too bad they couldn’t release any other G1 molds.

11 – Target Exclusive Construct-Bots Prime: Beast Hunters Predacons Rising Predaking

This is actually a really cool toy, but I would not include it in the Thrilling Thirty.  The fact is that Prime Predaking was in exactly one season of the cartoon.  He’s just not important enough to the history of the Transformers to be included in the Thrilling Thirty.  TT03 Ultra Magnus already represents Transformers Prime well enough.

12 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Year of the Horse Platinum Edition Masterpiece Optimus Prime

I am going to reluctantly include this one in the Thrilling Thirty.  The fact is, a Masterpiece Optimus Prime had to be included.  I just wish they had done the trailer in black and billed him as Masterpiece G2 Optimus Prime.  The clear trailer looked lousy.  In my final list, that is the one alteration I would make to an existing toy.  I don’t want to do too much of that, but this toy would have been so much nicer with a black trailer than the silly clear one.

13 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Year of the Horse Platinum Edition Supreme Starscream

As a representative of Transformers Cybertron, I would like to include this in the Thrilling Thirty, but I just can’t.  The original retail on this toy was $50.  It never had any die cast metal, which we know causes price increases.  They gutted the electronics from it.  Even with the normal increase of prices over time, this toy was insanely overpriced at $100, which is why its sitting on clearance now.  So, I’m going to say no to inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.

14 – Amazon.com Exclusive Age of Extinction First Edition Optimus Prime

I could go either way on this one, but I’m going to say no.  The movie universe should absolutely be represented, but there are better ways to do this than an online only exclusive toy.  I do like this toy, but not as a member of the Thrilling Thirty.

15 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Sunstorm

If this toy was not absolute garbage, I would include it.  Sunstorm was of course not an original character, but it’s been over 10 years since the first Sunstorm toy, and including it with the new Masterpiece mold would have been great.  The only problem is that this looks nothing like Sunstorm at all.  He is mustard yellow instead of orange yellow.  His head is brown instead of black.  His chest and torso is yellow instead of white.  The only thing they got right about this toy was his white hands.  Sunstorm is definitely not worthy on inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.

16 – Transformers 2014 Protectobots Evac Squad 2-Pack (Likely Asia Only) (Upcoming)
17 – Transformers 2014 Protectobots Emergency Response 3-Pack (Likely Asia Only) (Upcoming)

I’m going to take these two together.  It appears that these two will be Asia only exclusives, though a preorder for one of them with a release date of 10/1 has been put up on Amazon.  Still, Amazon selling a foreign exclusive is not exactly the same thing as a USA release.  I like these sets.  They are Prime toys as G1 characters, and I would have included them, but not as foreign exclusives.  I just can’t do it.  These should not be part of the Thrilling Thirty.

18 – Amazon.com Exclusive Age of Extinction Slog (G1 Repaint) (Upcoming)

I’m going to say yes to this one, a decent toy based on a classic G1 character in the correct colors.  However, it can’t be included by itself.  There should be two toys with the same number on this one.  More on that later, but I will say yes to this one in the Thrilling Thirty.

19 – SDCC 2014 / HTS Exclusive Knights of Unicron Set

Are you fucking kidding me Hasbro?  Was this some kind of bad joke?  If it were April I would be thinking April Fools.  While I grant that there is an incredible amount of creativity in this, the toys suck.  This one is absolutely not worthy of inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty, not to mention the inclusion of this over the Dinobot set with the Ark makes no sense at all.

20 – TRU / BBTS Age of Extinction Platinum Edition Breakout Battle (Upcoming)

This is a really cool set that I’m looking forward to, but not for the Thrilling Thirty.  The accurate (sort of, I think the Japanese one is better, but I need to compare it onscreen when I get the DVD) Prime is nice, and I like the repainted toys.  Problem is, there is another Platinum set that should have absolutely been included and was not.  That one needs to be added in place of this one, so I’m, going to say no to inclusion in the Thrilling Thirty.  Thought I do love the name given this set by the fans, “Farmageddon”.

21 – Generations Leader Class Jetfire

Yes.  Unquestionably yes.  This is what the Thrilling Thirty should have been all about.  Jetfire is absolutely included in the Thrilling Thirty.

22 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Bumblebee Evolution 2-Pack
23 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Optimus Prime Evolution 2-Pack
24 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Grimlock Evolution 2-Pack
25 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Slug Evolution 2-Pack
26 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Strafe Evolution 2-Pack

One of these Evolution sets should be included, but the others should not be.  Strafe and Slug were two AOE toys with Mini-Cons that were not properly painted in G1 colors, not to mention there are G1 versions that should have been included.  They are absolutely out.  Bumblebee is also out.  They should have used the Classics Bumblebee mold with the AOE mold.  Then I would have included it, but the Legends toy just isn’t good enough to represent G1.  The Grimlock set just isn’t really that good.  Evolutions Optimus Prime is an absolute must.  It includes the awesome Classics Voyager Optimus Prime with chrome.  He’s awesome.  It also includes the Evasion Mode Optimus Prime in a movie Optimus Prime paint job.  So, the three deluxes out, and the two Voyager sets in the Thrilling Thirty.

27 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Prowl

Even though it is horribly overpriced, this one is absolutely included in the Thrilling Thirty.  There is not enough representation of the original G1 cars.

28 – Target Exclusive Age of Extinction Smash & Change Silver Knight Optimus Prime
28 – Target Exclusive Age of Extinction Platinum Edition Silver Knight Optimus Prime

There were two toys numbered 28.  It goes without saying that the Smash & Change toy should not be included in the Thrilling Thirty.  As for the Silver Knight version of the First Edition Optimus Prime, I would include this toy if it was at all relevant in the movie.  Optimus underwent a few small changes late in the movie when he took the sword from Lockdown’s ship, but he did not turn silver.  Silver Knight might become relevant in the next movie, but at the moment, it was purely a construct to give Target something exclusive.  Neither of these get included in the Thrilling Thirty.

29 – Target Exclusive Age of Extinction Silver Knight Optimus Prime & Grimlock

This one is in.  Yes, after what I just said about Silver Knight Optimus Prime, you would think it would be out, but it has to be included.  First off, this is the only version of Movie Optimus Prime from the first three movies available to include.  Second, it looks awesome in chrome, and is not all silver like the others.  He has his regular red and blue colors also.  Even more important, this comes with the ultimate version of the Generations Grimlock mold.  He is not only chromed, but has the red hips like the G1.  This one is a must for the Thrilling Thirty.

30 – Generations Deluxe Class Windblade

I would have said yes on this before I got the toy.  It’s not a horrible toy, but it’s not great either.  It has a few design flaws.  Add to that, the idea of a “fan built toy” is a bit of a stretch.  Fans voted on some characteristics of the character and toy and Hasbro designers took it from there.  It’s cool, but nowhere near as special as they are trying to make it seem.  Plus, there are just more deserving toys.  This one does not get included in the Thrilling Thirty.

So, to sum up, the following Thrilling Thirty toys should have been included in the Thrilling Thirty:

03 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Ultra Magnus

04 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Grimlock vs. Bruticus

09 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Soundwave*

10 – TRU / BBTS / HTS Exclusive Platinum Edition Predaking

12 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Year of the Horse Platinum Edition Masterpiece Optimus Prime**

18 – Amazon.com Exclusive Age of Extinction Slog (G1 Repaint) (Upcoming)*

21 – Generations Leader Class Jetfire

23 – TRU Exclusive Age of Extinction Optimus Prime Evolution 2-Pack

27 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Prowl

29 – Target Exclusive Age of Extinction Silver Knight Optimus Prime & Grimlock

* – With a caveat below.
** – With a black trailer.

So, that’s 10 out of 30.  Here are the 22 more I would include.  It’s 22 because there are two sets of two toys that should have both had the same number for reasons that I will explain.

My Additions to the Thrilling Thirty

01 – Generations Deluxe Class Orion Pax

How could you not include Orion Pax, the toy of Optimus Prime before he was Optimus Prime?  Part of celebrating the Transformers needs to be celebrating it’s history, and what is more historic than the beginning of Optimus Prime’s story?

02 – Generations Deluxe Class Megatron

And if you’re going to start with Orion Pax, you have to follow up with Megatron, don’t you?  These two happen to fall perfectly at the start of the list.  You could start changing the order around, but I’m trying to stay close to release order.

05 – Generations Titan Class Metroplex

Hasbro picked the right toy for the Thrilling Thirty, they just didn’t pick the right version.  The retail version would have been perfect for the Thrilling Thirty.

06 – Generations Deluxe Class Trailcutter

There are a lot of original G1 characters that I would have loved to include, but there were no toys of them during the right time.  Jazz, Thundercracker, and Skywarp come to mind to name a few.  Not much you can do about that, but at least we can include Trailbreaker…err…Trailcutter.  I’m going to try not to let the name change bother me.

07 – Generations Voyager Class Springer

You have to have at least one or two toys from Transformers: The Movie.  Platinum Edition Ultra Magnus is based on Transformers: Prime.  There is no Rodimus, Blurr, Galvatron, Cyclonus, etc. available.  Springer had to be included in the Thrilling Thirty.

08 – Generations Voyager Class Rhinox

I know that for all the Transformers fans who love Beast Wars, there are as many who hate it.  The fact is, Transformers might have died out during the 1990s if not for the revival it saw with Transformers: Beast Wars.  There are several new Beast Wars toys released, and they all need to be included in the Thrilling Thirty.

09 – Generations One Linkin Park Soundwave with Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Laserbeak, Ratbat, and Ravage

Okay, there should have been two Thrilling Thirty #09.  The TRU Masterpiece Soundwave was an easy choice, but there is only one G1 mold in the entire line.  As awful as the Linkin Park Soundwave and cassettes was, it should have been given a duplicate number.  I know this was planned before the Thrilling Thirty, but I have the benefit of hindsight.  I know this one was limited, but I figure that with the duplicate number, a lot of people would just pretend it does not exist.  We just had to makde some more G1 molds, and this was the only way.

11 – Generations Deluxe Class Waspinator

Another Beast Wars toy, and a fan favorite character.  Including Waspinator should never have even been in question.

13 – Generations Deluxe Class Scoop with Caliburst and Holepunch

There are very few toys that represent the late G1 Transformers toys.  Sub groups like Headmasters, Targetmasters, Powermasters, Pretenders, and Micromasters.  For that reason, I think Scoop has to be included.

14 – Generations Deluxe Class Armada Starscream

Vastly underrepresented in the Thrilling Thirty line is Starscream.  The only other Starscream toy that I could have included was the Generations Legend Starscream, but I think toys for celebrating 30 years of Transformers should be more substantial than a Legends Class toy.  This Starscream also represents Armada, and more largely the entire Unicron Trilogy.

15 – Generations Deluxe Class Beast Machines Tankor

Beast Machines may not have been as good as Beast Wars, but it’s importance in giving a real ending to Beast Wars is undeniable.  As the only Beast Machines toy available to include, Tankor is a must for the Thrilling Thirty.

16 – Generations Deluxe Class Beast Wars Rattrap

He’s Rattrap.  Really, do I have to say more?

17 – TRU Exclusive Masterpiece Grimlock

There are a number of Grimlocks in the Thrilling Thirty already, but how can you not include Masterpiece Grimlock?  He’s a truly awesome toy of a classic fan favorite character.  How could you not include him?

18 – SDCC 2014 / HTS G1 Dinobots w/Ark

It really boggles my mind that Hasbro would include the Knights of Unicron set in the Thrilling Thirty, but would omit the G1 Dinobots with an Ark play set.  As I said earlier, I am against convention exclusives being included in the Thrilling Thirty.  However, this toy is still available from HTS.  Normally SDCC exclusives hit HTS, vanish within minutes, and leave the majority of fans to spend huge amounts to get them on eBay.  I don’t know if they increased production for the anniversary or if they just realized they were under producing, and it may go back to the same old way next year, but the availability of this toy is different than other convention exclusives.  I’ve given him the same number as Amazon.com Exclusive G1 Slog for obvious reasons.

19 – Generations Voyager Class Whirl
20 – Generations Voyager Class Roadbuster

Whirl and Roadbuster are G1 characters, and fan favorites,  Seemed obvious to include them.

22 – Generations Deluxe Class Arcee (Upcoming)

Do I really need to explain including a toy that we have literally been waiting twenty-eight years for?  It will always bother me that we never got a real G1 aesthetic Arcee toy, but this will definitely help and is a must to include in the Thrilling Thirty.

24 – TRU Exclusive Kre-O Grimlock Unleashed

I know that some people will have a problem with including a Kre-O set, but I love this set so much.  This is what we should have always got.  I always thought that non transforming Kre-O sets were the way to go.  I would have also included the buildable robot, but this set is certainly a step in the right direction.

25 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Age of Extinction Platinum Edition Optimus Prime with Trailer and Sideswipe (Upcoming)

This toy fills a couple of missing gaps in the Thrilling Thirty.  First off, it’s an Optimus Prime with a trailer.  Second of all, it includes Sideswipe.  Third, it is the only Age of Extinction Prime included (non evasion mode).  While done in red, Sideswipe is the Revenge of the Fallen mold, but this gives us and additional older move mold, which is not as well represented as it should be.

26 – TRU / BBTS Exclusive Age of Extinction Platinum Edition Autobots United (Upcoming)

I cannot fathom why this toy is not a member of the Thrilling Thirty to begin with.  It gives us all our Autobot main characters from Age of Extinction, including the only Bumblebee in my Thrilling Thirty, and the only G1 painted Evasion Mode Optimus Prime.  We get Hound, though not the G1 and Drift who is a very popular character in recent years.  Not to mention it’s awesome to get these toys with better paint jobs.

28 – Generations Voyager Class Brainstorm (Upcoming)

As with Scoop, late G1 sub groups are not well represented, so Brainstorm is a must.

30 – Generations Leader Class Megatron (G1) (Upcoming)

And finally, we have a G1 Optimus Prime, how can we not include a G1 Megatron?  True, he will be a tank and not a gun, but there really isn’t much we can do about that.  This looks like an awesome toy and needs to be included in the Thrilling Thirty.

Honorable Mention

There is one segment of Transformers History that was not represented at all, and that’s Robots in Disguise.  I was tempted to include Generations Voyager Sky-Bite.  That would have represented RID.  Problem is, I think it’s just such a crappy toy.  I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  It’s too bad the reissue of RID Optimus Prime fell through.  That would have been perfect.

I also might have included the Year of the Snake Energon Optimus Prime and Omega Supreme to represent Energon, and Generations Deluxe Dreadwing to represent G2, and the Mini-Con team, but I just ran out of numbers.

Some specific characters were under represented or not represented at all.  Bumblebee, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Jazz, Starscream, Ironhide, Ratchet, and a bunch more should have been represented, but you can only get so many toys in the line.  If I were to really build a thrilling thirty set from the ground up, I would have done a lot of two packs and brought back some older toys like Universe Ironhide and Ratchet, and 2010 Jazz.  There is little question they could have done a lot more to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

Here is the final list of what I would have included in the Thrilling Thirty.  I certainly would chang the order, but that really isn’t that important.

01 – Generations Deluxe Class Orion Pax

02 – Generations Deluxe Class Megatron

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.

  1. lmb3 says:

Good point. I’m hoping somewhere down the road we get it repainted in G2 Megatron colors.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

  2. Sounds like the Leader Class Megatron would better represent G2 than G1, even if done in a semi-G1 gray color scheme. We just aren’t going to get a US-available G1 Megatron, unless Hasbro decides to change the marketing to “collectibles/replicas” which allows non-working realistic-looking weapons, which I doubt they have the intestines for.
