Blog #551: Toy Reviews: Transformers: Generations Voyager Whirl

Transformers Generations Voyager Whirl

Before I get to the toy itself, I must talk about the stickers.  Most of his detail is stickers rather than paint apps.  I think I understand why that is, his stickers mostly consist of tiny text blurbs and some people might choose not to put them on the toy.  These kind of stickers were common on a few G1 toys (Omega Supreme comes to mind, possibly Whirl too, I don’t recall) and many GI Joe toys.  The photo on the back of the box is clearly painted and looks much better.  I would have preferred they just leave them out.  They really don’t do anything to improve the toy.

Vehicle Mode:  Whirl’s Helicopter mode is as close to perfect as is possible.  It looks fantastic.  I am not crazy about his weapons, he has completely different weapons for each side of the copter.  I would much prefer them be uniform.  Also, since the weapons connect to bars on his with clips (something Hasbro stopped doing for a while) they have multiple clips on them to connect to the whether horizontal or vertical, which doesn’t look at all good.  Simpler weapons that pegged on and were uniform on both sides would have been much better.

Robot Mode:  Whirl’s robot mode is awesome.  If they had managed not to screw up his feet he would be perfect.  I like the look of his feet with the double prongs on each and single in back, but it forces his to stand like he’s back on his heals.  It just looks odd.

About lmb3

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.

    I know it didn’t, but I didn’t like that then either 🙂

Who-hoo! The original toy didn’t have matched weapons either, so with that, the look of the stickers, etc this is a nice homage. Will actually have to revisit the notion that I only need G1 versions of the characters.
