Botcon 2014 Deluxe Cannonball
So, it’s been a while since it was announced, but this year’s Botcon story is Pirates vs. Knights. Yes, I agree, it sounds rather under whelming. Having said that, it’s certainly an interesting idea and a concept that could work. Whether it will or not has yet to be seen, as they have had other good concepts with toys that fell far short of expectations.
A couple of thoughts on the concept.
If they are doing Knights, they need to move heaven and earth to get Beast Wars Neo Mach Kick as one of the Knights. What are Knights without horses, am I right? Hmm…having used the plural there I now have a thought it could be the troop builder. As long as they are in different colors that’s fine by me. This is one of the greatest Beast era toys to never be repainted. Since they did use Big Convoy recently, another Beast Wars Neo toy, it would not be out of the question that it could be available. Though Hasbro has previously used Big Convoy and not Mach Kick. I will have to cross my fingers.
My one concern is that there are few toys with typical pirate traits like eye patches (and virtually none with peg legs or parrots. You can only paint skeletons and such on so many toys before it looks like you’re trying too hard to make toys fit the concept rather than fitting your concept around great toys. That is in a nutshell what Botcon’s biggest problem has been under Fun Publications (in regards to toys, they have a lot bigger problems, but I digress). They should make great toys and worry less about fitting them into their concept.
On to Cannonball…
Transformers Cybertron Deluxe Cannonball (For Reference.)
First off, they have done an amazing job painting up Transformers: Prime Deluxe Ratchet as Cannonball (with a new head). I have to admit, I never really cared for the painting of half of cannonball’s face in black. I can only assume the idea is to make it seem like an eye patch, but if that was what they were going for, his whole eye should have been painted black. What bugs me is that Botcon could do that now and correct Hasbro’s mistake, or even mold the head to only have one eye, or even a molded patch.
There are times when you should be a slave to the original toys when doing an homage, like they should have done last year when they used the cartoon paint job on Obsidian instead of the toy colors which would have looked so much better. There are also times when you need to correct what was clearly a stupid mistake (like the should have done last year by doing Thundercracker and Skywarp in the correct colors).
If it were me, I might have used Beast Hunters Ratchet and not bothered to remold his head. He already has one regular eye and the other painted black could like enough like a patch. What more could they ask for on a pirate?
Having said that, it really isn’t a major thing. Hasbro did it wrong, so why not repeat a mistake? Certainly wouldn’t be the first time. Overall, I do have to say I like this one.
