Blog #244: Toy Review: Transformers Toys R Us Exclusive Masterpiece Thundercracker

Transformers Toys R Us Exclusive Masterpiece Thundercracker

For details on this new mold, please read my review of MP-11 Masterpiece Starscream.

Thundercracker is a repaint of MP-11 Starscream.  He is beautifully painted, a perfect G1 Thundercracker.  He does have a couple of oddities.

For some reason, Thundercracker has tampos of Reflector on the sides of his jet.  They end up on the backs of his shoulders in robot mode.  Looks nice, but I’m not sure why it’s there.  Also, on his tailfins he has white drawing of himself with Soundwave in stereo form on his shoulder.  Not sure why, I would have preferred it without it.

I must give credit to Hasbro where it is due.  They included both the missiles and base that were left out of MP-11 Starscream.  That’s a very nice addition.

Unfortunately, as Hasbro usually does, when they do something good, they also screwed up.  The Thundercracker box has the same toy info as Skywarp, including that he has interchangeable faces.  This version does not have the interchangeable faces.  Also, they used the old instructions with a new name.  Unfortunately, the old instructions were for the old mold, not MP-11.  You can still figure it out, but I can’t believe they included the wrong instructions.

Hasbro also jacked the price up on this (maybe TRU is to blame, but either way).  When I bought mine the first week it showed up it was $69.99.  The website had a list price of $99.99 with it on sale for $69.99.  Now they ROSE the price, just weeks after it came out to $74.99, also reflected on the web site.  There are tons at the TRUs I’ve been to lately, at least a dozen at each, so if you are patient, and willing to risk them selling out, you might want to wait for clearance.  Skywarp ended up on clearance at Walmart, and they lasted forever, but as this is a new mold it might be risky.

Thanks for reading!
