Blog #1753: Artifact of the Week: Transformers: Generation One Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Set (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Rodimus Prime, Ironhide, Jazz, Ratchet, Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave, Scorponok, Skywarp, Ratbat)

Transformers: Generation One Coca-Cola Bottle Cap Set (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Rodimus Prime, Ironhide, Jazz, Ratchet, Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave, Scorponok, Skywarp, Ratbat)

I recently picked up a set of Transformers Coca-Cola Bottle Caps. These are very cool, but I know very little about them. They came with this card to mount them on.

There are twelve in the set and the card has peel offs to reveal adhesive so you can mount the bottle caps to the card. Unfortunately, there is no trademark or manufacturing information on the card, but there is a clue to the origin on the caps themselves.

You can’t really read it in the pic, but the caps say they were manufactured in Rio de Janeiro, so they would seem to come from Brazil. Unfortunately, there is no date on them. Each cap has some numbers on the side. The first one I looked at, the Optimus Prime, has “02-12” on the side of the cap, and I thought that was either a date of manufacture or expiration, February 2012. Unfortunately, each cap has different numbers on them. Some numbers are higher than 12, so it doesn’t seem like they are a date. I have no idea when they are from. Here are what the caps look like inside.

This is an odd collection of characters. You have Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime. You have Ratbat, but no Soundwave. You have Starscream and Skywarp, but no Thundercracker. You have Scorponok, which seems really random. My friend Zabgoth noted that most of them use the Marvel Universe character art, though some may be more modern. He noted he black helmet on Megatron. He said the art has more shading than the Marvel Universe art, so they aren’t taken directly from that. Skywarp uses his G1 box art. Unfortunately, the art doesn’t narrow down the date much as a few look more modern to him than G1 Marvel. These are very cool. If anyone has any more information on them you can provide, I would really appreciate it.

As always, you can find over 16,000 Transformers artifacts from every Transformers series and generation at TFMuseum.com.

Thanks for reading!

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.
