Snapped this one up on Amazon, but I missed out on Silverbolt and the Deluxes.  Should be getting them in a few weeks.  I have a major problem with the packaging on the new Generations toys, but I am going to handle that in a separate blog in the next few days.  I will post a link here when that’s up.

Vehicle Mode: This is a very cool truck mode.  They kept the classic square cab, but gave him a modern upgrade.  I really like this one, though it would have been nice if some of his gray plastic was painted silver, or red in the case of the gray plastic on the front side of the cab (with the side mirrors molded into it).  Those two parts should have been painted red with silver paint on the mirrors and black for the window part.  Still, that aside, they did a pretty great job on him.

Robot Mode: Optimus looks amazing in robot mode.  There is a little bit of a departure from G1 as he does not have the silver grill on his torso.  I love the Autobot symbols on his shoulders, and he has an awesome head sculpt.  I love that they gave him real fists instead of the open hands they like to do these days.

Overall: This one is a must.  We haven’t really had a new G1 Optimus Prime (not including AOE Evasion Mode Optimus Prime) since the Universe Voyager Prime (one of the best molds of all time).  It’s nice to have a new one.  The fact that he can lead a combiner team is pretty awesome.  Initially, I thought that was more of a gimmick, but it has been reported online that we may be getting combiner limbs of Sunstreaker, Ironhide, Prowl, and Mirage.  This would be pretty easy using Stunticon molds.

G1 fans will remember the cartoon episode Masquerade where Optimus Prime, Jazz, Sideswipe, Mirage, and Windcharger disguised themselves as the Stunticons.  It would have been really cool to get those four characters, but I suspect that this is a case of trademark maintenance.  I don’t think they have used Sunstreaker, Ironhide, and Mirage for a while, and they need to use their trademarks periodically to keep from losing them.  I just hope they get new heads or I’m going to be very pissed.

Thanks for reading!
