Blog #484: Transformers Artifact of the Week: 1987 Transformers Promotional Metroplex Pin & Darkwing and Ultra Magnus Eyeglasses Cases

1987 Transformers Promotional Metroplex Pin

tfartpin

Picked this up recently.  It’s a button pin dated 1987 from the UK.  It seems to be a promotional item from Eye-Wear maker Dollond & Atchison.  I’m not clear if this was something given out by sales reps to optometrists to promote their products, or if it was something provided to optometrists to give out to patients (like the stickers children commonly receive in the USA).  Could be either.  In any case, it’s a really neat item.

Darkwing and Ultra Magnus Eyeglasses Cases

As it happens, I have a couple of the items that the above pin was promoting.

These are very cool.  They are children’s eyeglasses cases with clips to attach to backpacks, jackets, or whatever.  They are dated 1987 and made by Dollond & Atchison as well.  What I find interesting is that we rarely see anything with a secondary character like Darkwing on merchandise in the USA.  I have quite a few other items from the UK with secondary characters on them.  Not sure why this is, maybe just differences in marketing where in the USA Hasbro pushed it’s main characters, while the UK chose to be more diverse.

As always, you can find over 9000 Transformers merchandise items and collectibles at TFMuseum.com.

Thanks for reading!

About lmb3

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.
