Transformers Generations Spotlight Deluxe Class Optimus Prime 3-Pack
Optimus Prime
Previous Mold Use: Studio Series Devastation Deluxe Class Optimus Prime
This three pack of the exact same mold (now including a gun that the original didn’t) is meant to evoke the process of creating a Transformer toy, starting with a gray prototype, an unpainted prototype, and a final version. The gray Optimus Prime is kind of cool. The unpainted prototype version bugs me a bit. Many Hasbro prototypes (also test shots and preproduction samples) have damage on them meant to make them unappealing to collectors (it doesn’t work). In this case they painted “TF1984” on his chest. I would have loved it if they had done a new head meant to look intentionally damaged in some way. I mean, it gets the point across, but they could have gone the extra mile. If you don’t know what I mean, here is an example.
This is my Botcon Flak preproduction sample. As you can see, an “X” has been etched into his face and waist. Clearly this did not dissuade me from buying it. Had they given Optimus Prime a head sculpt damaged like this I would like this set a lot better. As to the final toy, since I never played the game, I don’t know which is more accurate, but this final Optimus Prime is way more detailed than the retail version. I have mixed feelings on the cell shading paintjobs, but I do like this one.
Overall: For completists only.
