Blog #2800: Toy Review: Transformers: Retro: 40th Anniversary Optimus Prime

Transformers: Retro: 40th Anniversary Optimus Prime

The box has a flap and a window. Praise Primus! The box is a work of art unto itself. They have discontinued the Transformers: The Movie trade dress for a more G1 40th Anniversary theme. It looks great, and even with the box change they are continuing making the toys as animation accurate as possible.

Optimus Prime is now G1 animation accurate (or as close as possible). He has a white front bumper and white legs, his grill is and gas tanks are now metallic silver instead of chrome. He has blue eyes.

Overall: This is a nice looking Optimus Prime, but lacks an animation accurate head. What frustrates me about that is that a more animation accurate head for the G1 toy does exist, but was only ever used on the Music Label Optimus Prime. That was not directly based on the animation, but is much closer than the G1 toy head. He’s probably not a must have if you already have a G1 Optimus Prime, but he’s well worth picking up.

About lmb3

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.
