Blog #140: Movie Review: Battleship

Spoilers ahead, but since no one is seeing this movie, it doesn’t really matter.

If you can ignore unrealistic things in movies and enjoy them for the story and pure awesome, like I do, then you will love this movie.  If you let the unrealistic things take away from your enjoyment of the story, then you won’t like this movie.  It’s that simple.

It’s a funny thing to talk about unrealistic things in a movie about an alien invasion.  However, if anyone seriously thinks that a handful of Naval personal along with a bunch of retired Naval personnel could get the seventy year old Battleship Missouri that has been a floating museum for the past fourteen years up and running and take it into battle against an attacking alien force in just a couple of hours, then you really need to think again.  Having said that, it’s one of the most freaking awesome things I’ve ever seen in a movie, and while it was just CGI, watching the “Mighty Mo” in action was amazing.  The movie is worth seeing for this alone.

If you want to see a movie with great action, amazing affects, and a bilateral amputee kicking alien ass, you will love this film.  Just don’t get bogged down in the unrealistic elements.

One other thing.  I was curious to see how they would work elements of the Battleship board game into the movie.  They did a pretty darn good job of it.  One of the alien weapons is a small missile that is shaped much like the traditional pegs from the board game.  Also, they used a grid of tsunami detection buoys to locate the alien ships to fire at.  Not bad ways to get the game represented.

If you don’t want to spend the money to see this in the theater, I highly recommend you see it when it comes to DVD.

Thanks for reading!
