Transformers Masterpiece Optimus Prime (MP-1L)
A few summers ago, I went on a quest to complete my collection of Masterpiece Optimus Prime MP-10 repaints. Somewhere along the way, I realized, that there was one version of the original Masterpiece MP-1 Optimus Prime that I never got. So, I had to track that one down.
“Last Production” Optimus Prime is not even a repaint of the original, its actually nearly identical to the original.
He comes with a repaint of the base that came with the second Hasbro release of MP-10 with a new sound chip.
I never did a full review of this toy as it came out before I started my blog. When it came out, it seems like we would never see a better Optimus Prime, but of course, we did, multiple times. He looks pretty good in vehicle mode, but glaringly lacks rear view mirrors. If I really want to quibble, his fuel tanks seem way too far back. In robot mode he looks pretty awesome. My biggest complaint about this version of Optimus Prime was that he was so freaking heavy. Transforming him made my arms ache. Admittedly, I am not possessed of a great deal of arm strength. Pretty sure Kermit the frog can lift more than I can, but still.
This toy does have a minor mold change from the original toy, which is why I needed to own it. The words “Last Shot” was molded into his lower back. Why did they do this? I really don’t know.
Overall: If you have any version of this mold, you do not need to own this one, unless you are a completist.
