Blog #202: Movie Review: The Watch

How do I describe The Watch?  There two types of comedy.  Funny movies and stupid movies that you just have to laugh at.  This is the latter.

Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade play four suburbanites who form a neighborhood watch after a night watchman is murdered.  Unfortunately, they don’t realize that aliens murdered him and are planning an invasion of earth.

If you like middle school level jokes, gross humor, and stupidity you can’t help but laugh at, you’ll love it.  Still I can’t recommend seeing it in the theater.  It’s just not good enough to warrant that.

What gets me about this movie is that it could have been much better.  If they went for more humor and less middle school it could have been great.  For example, Will Forte plays an over the top ridiculous cop.  Is he funny?  Yes.  But it’s funny because of how bad it is, not because it’s actually funny.

Nothing to write home about, but it’s worth laughing at once.  I don’t think I could ever watch it again.

About lmb3

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.
