Blog #2936: Toy Review: Transformers Missing Link Sunstreaker and Cordon

Transformers Missing Link Sunstreaker and Cordon

The Transformers Missing Link series takes original G1 toys and reengineers them with modern joints and possibility, but now Hasbro and Takara have gone a step further. It’s only taken forty years, but the G1 Arcee prototype design has been remolded to have modern joints. Honestly, I couldn’t care less about the joints. G1 Arcee is finally a reality!

Sunstreaker and Cordon

Drivers: Sunstreaker and Cordon come with Diaclone style drivers.  Sunstreaker’s is meant to be Spike, though I do not know why he has Destro’s head.

Vehicle Mode: Everyone once in a while Hasbro and Takara, interspersed with all the sub par crap, and good but not great toys, they will create an absolute five star home run. Sunstreaker is AWESOME! Cordon is as well, but holy crap I love Sunstreaker. Someone at Takara really put a lot of thought into this. As you can see Sunstreaker has the read rear fenders, but also comes with yellow stickers to put over them if you would prefer he look like he was supposed to and not how he actually ended up looking. In fact, he comes with stickers if you want to cover the paint apps to truly give him that G1 look, not that I know why anyone would cover paint apps with stickers. The paint on his canopy is matched perfectly to the plastic, something we have seen Hasbro and Takara screw up with alarming regularity over the years. Cordon looks great too.

Robot Mode: The hold modifications most people will care about are his added joints. They are fine. You can now post him. Be warned though, while I have not heard about him breaking, I am concerned about the new design. When you push his legs in to transform to vehicle mode, you are pushing on a post connected to the body at a 90-degree angle. This puts a lot of stress on a fairly small piece of plastic. I highly recommend sticking a finger above his hip and holding it so you’re putting pressure against your finger pushing in his leg rather than on the connection to his body. I may be being overly cautious, but I was really worried about breaking him. They did an impressive job redesigning his forearms. You can now fold his hands inside of his forearms rather than remove them, but they also included two sets, one like the original and a new set with a port that can also open at the knuckles. Sunstreaker can now hold a gun, which is new, and based on Sideswipe’s gun. If you look at the paint apps inside his abdomen, you can see the art has been reversed. This is because G1 Sunstreaker had the stickers backwards from how they had been on the Diaclone toy. Those stickers are now molded and painted, meaning they made two different chest molds for Sunstreaker and Cordon. That is some incredible detail. I’m not sure I ever even knew Sunstreaker had the stickers reversed. That is a deep cut.

Overall: Sunstreaker is absolutely AWESOME! I cannot recommend him enough. Cordon looks great, but I don’t think he is a must have unless you’re a Diaclone fan.

Thanks for reading!
