Blog #2860: Toy Review: Transformers Masterpiece Super Ginrai (MPG-09)

Transformers Masterpiece Super Ginrai (MPG-09)

Accessories

Super Ginrai comes with blast effects, additional heads, and red and blue hands like the original G1 Takara toy.

Ginrai (Hi-Q)

Ginrai looks great, now with lighter red arms and thighs. Also included is a small non-transforming Ginrai.

Ginrai (Optimus Prime)

Previous Mold Use: Masterpiece Ginrai

Vehicle Mode: In vehicle mode there is very little difference between the two versions of the cab. In robot mode you can see differences in eye color, his Autobot logo(s), and paint apps on his legs, thighs and waist.

Super Ginrai (Powermaster Optimus Prime

Vehicle Mode: Super Ginrai looks amazing in vehicle mode. He’s perfectly painted.

Base Mode: He has a base mode, such as it is.

Robot Mode: Super Ginrai looks pretty great. If his Powermaster engine didn’t keep falling out he’d be perfect. That is an inexcusable design flaw.

Compared to Power Baser

You can read my review of Power Baser here.

Vehicle Mode: In vehicle mode, the Masterpiece certainly looks more like the G1 toy. But I must admit I like the bigger guns of Power Baser. The original toy had his arms sticking up as the Masterpiece does. So while accurate, I prefer Power Baser folding them inside. Admittedly Power Baser’s trailer does look open and unfinished in the front, but it’s not terrible.

Robot Mode: In robot mode, it’s much the same. The Masterpiece looks more like the G1 toy, while Power Baser looks better than the G1 toy. I don’t have a picture in scale, but Power Baser is a little bit taller than the Masterpiece and he just looks more detailed and more badass.

Overall: If you read my reviews of Masterpiece Raiden and Moon Studios Radiatron, the third party was clearly superior. That is not so clear cut with Masterpiece Super Ginrai and Power Baser. The Masterpiece very much is striving to recreate the G1 toy and does so extremely well, maybe even too much as the arms folding inside would have been nice. Power baser is going for better than the G1 toy, so it’s really up to which you prefer. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Though, I must admit, having to wait for Masterpiece Godbomber sucks. I need him now!

Thanks for reading!

About lmb3

I’m 36 years old, and I work in network tech support for a public school system. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, and Marvel Comics as well as numerous other fandoms. I’m a big sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. I collect toys (mostly Transformers but other stuff too), comic books, and Red Sox baseball cards. I watch an obscene amount of television and love going to the movies. I am hopelessly addicted to Wizard Rock and I write Harry Potter Fanfiction, though these days I am working on a couple of different original YA novels.
