Transformers Masterpiece Trainbot Raiden

Raiden looks really great, but he is not perfect. Let’s start with the good. I like the overall design. Colors are great, as is his head sculpt. I love the silver chromed sword that came in the gift set version of Kaen. As for the bad, he’s very bulky, a side effect of making the trains looks like their real world counterparts. There is a lot of extra plastic that needs to go somewhere. His hands seem very small. His gun also seems small. His ankle guns have lots of train parts folded around them. As to how he compares to Moon Studios Raiden…

Here we have them side by side. Moon Studios Raiden is much cleaner. The MP version looks like he has a pot belly. Ankle guns have lots of crap around then, while Moon Studios are perfect. I like toys that integrate their accessories, but the MP is seriously hampered by that. This photo makes them look like they are the same size. Here is a pick with them roughly in scale.

Moon Studios Raiden is about 20 inches tall, Takara/Hasbro’s is only 11 inches. In this case, size does matter.

Here you can see how both compare to the G1 toy. The Moon Studios version looks a lot more like the original than the Masterpiece.

Overall: The retail price of Masterpiece Raiden is around $915, over $100 more than Moon Studios Raiden can be had for, and the toy is just over half the size of Moon Studios Raiden when combined. If you’re only going to get one, I have to recommend Moon Studios Raiden over Masterpiece Raiden. That does not mean Masterpiece Raiden is not a very good toy. Those who don’t buy third party toys should absolutely get the Masterpiece. It just has a lot of flaws that frankly, the Moon Studios version doesn’t have, and the overall aesthetic of the moon Studios version is just better.
